ATI Remote Wonder driver problems!

Had problems after doing a clean install on my machine. Couldn’t get the ATI Remote Wonder drivers to install correctly. This process is time consuming, but it definitely works.

  1. Find all x10* files and delete them. I also have BeyondTV and uninstalled the Firefly Mini item it installs.
  2. Uninstall Remote Wonder drivers if you have any
  3. Unplug the receiver
  4. Install the Remote Wonder drivers and reboot as recommended
  5. Once reboot, check Task Manager and stop atirw.exe if it’s running.
  6. Plug-in your Remote Wonder receiver. If windows recognizes and installs the driver, you’re good to go.
  7. If not, point the device wizard to c:\program files\ati multimedia\remctrl\drivers. It should install it correctly now.
  8. Start the ATI Remote Wonder program from your start menu and your remote should now work.

Additional notes:
ATI SAYS:
(my solution is further below because this didn’t work for me):

(I can’t link to ATI-AMD support files so if you need the files go to support.ati.com and click on TV TUNER->Remote Wonder link for the file links to mfc71.dll and msvcr71.dll) Also, all old MMC software is available on the site. 9.15 encoder will not work if you have an Nvidia GeForce card like me so you’ll have to use 9.14… Or if you prefer, some of the older stuff probably works better…

**************************************************************
IF ABOVE DIDN’T WORK FOR YOU (AS IT DIDN’T FOR ME), THEN HERE IS MY SOLUTION:
**************************************************************

Well, I have XP SP2 and I have an ATI HDTV wonder and the new version 3.04 software from ATI’s website wouldn’t work.

I got the error message (just like everyone else near the end of the install)…

Error 1904.Module C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\RemCtr\ATIRW.DLL failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel.

I did figure out the answer though and I finally fixed it so I figured I’d contribute to the community here just in case anyone was still interested and found this useful. I did not find this fix anywhere on the net and the information that is available has been incorrect thus far. This works however.

The x10net.dll file FAILS to register during the install because of read-only permissions on the registry keys that are created! Turns out that one or a few of the registry keys created by the install program have a permissions bug in which they are read-only despite the fact that my user account has admin privileges on my computer so I was scratching my head as to why this occurred but it did.

WARNING: BEFORE DOING ANYTHING IN THE REGISTRY, MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY FILE JUST IN CASE AND/OR DO A RESTORE POINT ON YOUR MACHINE USING SYSTEM RESTORE. TO Backup your registry, go to START->RUN and type in regedit and then go to the File menu and choose EXPORT and save the registry using a name you can remember in a location that is easy to find. (like the root of C: just in case you need to restore it)….

FIX FOR ATI HDTV REMOTE WONDER V3.04 (latest version found on AMD-ATI site)
——————————————————————————-

In any case, the fix is that you need to find those keys and change their permissions and then after that’s done, you need to run the following command at the START->Run prompt:

regsvr32 “C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\RemCtrl\x10net.dll”

If you receive a failure notice to register the dll, go into regedit and search for “X10COMMAND” and you will find a bunch of keys grouped together as shown below that are all READ ONLY.

Here are the keys I changed permissions to FULL CONTROL on on my currently logged in username (you must have admin status to change permissions in the first place though so make sure the account you are logged in on has administrator privileges first — if not, log in using the admin account or another account that does have those permissions)…

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10CommanderFile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10CommanderFile2
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.X10Control
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.X10Control.1
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.X10Interface
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.X10Interface.1
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.X10ServerInterface
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.X10ServerInterface.1
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.XButton
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\X10net.XButton.1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\X10CommanderFile
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\X10CommanderFile2

You’ll know they are read only because you right click and go to Permissions and you’ll see that you need to change them to “FULL CONTROL”. Make sure however that you change them to FULL CONTROL but on either your account or the Administrators/Admins USER ACCOUNT (just make sure you’re an admin and in this group). i.e. Select your username on the permission screen to match your current login and then click the checkbox next to FULL CONTROL.

Go through all keys shown above and change them to FULL CONTROL on your user account or the admin user account as long as you’re an admin and then exit the registry editor and then try to register the DLL again using the above command and once it goes through, make sure your USB receiver is UNPLUGGED, and then either log out/log in or reboot your machine. Then plug in your USB receiver and walla!, you should see the ATI REMOTE WONDER TRAY icon and your remote should now work properly!

As for ATI’s software, I got version 9.15 working by wiping my system of all the old software by using add/remove to remove all the entries I could including DAO (some would not remove however) and then manually deleting all directories under program files related to ATI (ATI Multimedia and ATI Technologies) and then using a registry cleaner (ABEXO free registry cleaner off Download.com) to clean out all the remaining ATI registry related entries.

Then I rebooted and installed per ATI’s instructions in this exact order,

1) the DAO file v 9.15,
2) then the DVD Decoder file 9.15 — you need your original cd in the drive to install the decoder,
3) then the ENCODER file v9.14 (9.15 would not install on my machine because it didn’t like my Nvidia Display adapter and would give an error saying I didn’t have the right hardware/software for the install– so I had to use the MAY 2006 9.14 encoder file instead which you can find on the support site since they have all the BACK drivers available for download)
4) then the 9.15 MMC
5) And then LAST I installed the 3.04 Remote Wonder Software using the permissions fix detailed above.

Sometimes the TV tuner will still crash once in awhile however I have gotten everything working fairly stable now. ATI DVD won’t work for some reason. Splash comes up and then exits. So instead I programmed the “A” button to load Intervideo WinDVD which works great anyways and is still controllable with the remote! Not sure if the Easylook is working 100% properly with my primary nvidia adapter but as long as I can control the TV and Intervideo with the remote along with the basic volume, channel, and DVR functions, I’m happy. It’s not perfect and this software could be WAAAY better. Also, my hard drive is slow and so it causes jittery playback sometimes. Says DMA isn’t on, but I’m pretty sure it is. If everything crashes, it’s most likely because you need to wait till the end to install the 3.04 remote wonder software and/or you didn’t remove the old ATI installs properly to begin with — absolutely have to delete all add/remove entries and old directories manually and use a reg cleaner. The USB driver tends to crash everything. Had to reboot an extra time since the receiver hung the system the first time I put it back in after all the installs but then it worked fine.

Hope this helps someone.
Take care and thank g-d for the net eh?

-One Big Yahoo (Shame on ATI for not fixing this issue and their time consuming and flaky software! Good hardware and crappy software = crappy everything!!! I’ll be looking for a better HDTV tuner soon — hopefully a better company with better programmers who actually beta test properly before releasing garbage!)

NAS storage for the home

I keep thinking about buying one of these boxes that have RAID-5 support with at least a Terabyte of storage. With my video, music and photo collections, and various problems with hard drives, I’d like the extra security of a RAID box.

The names I’ve come across so far that are ‘affordable’ are Buffalo Technology TeraStation

Infrant NAS and Newisys NA-1400.

They’re all around $1000 for the box, and then you have to add hard-drives. Not cheap, but RAID-5 for important data is well worth it. How much is it worth to you to ensure your photos are safe?

I haven’t made a decision on any of these, and I notice that Buffalo now has some PRO versions too. Previous comparisons of Buffalo and Infrant had Infrant on top, but I’ll have to see if I can find a review using the new Buffalo Pro versions to see how they stack up.

A very comprehensive discussion of monitor technology, and LCDs in particular. Reading the article, there is no doubt DVI is the only way to go with an LCD. Well worth a skim, if not a comprehensive read.

Contour Design – IPod case and other devices

They make many items, focusing on excellent design.

The IPod case looks very good, although I don’t have any personal experience with it.

I’m also interested in the Shuttle Pro. This is used for video editing, and could speed up the task of trimming and scanning through video. I’ll have to find one in a store so I can test it out and see if it’s worth the price.

Apple iPod

As noted earlier, I’ve been looking at portable music players. Bought an Apple iPod, and so far, so good.

It’s a reasonable size (although probably a bit large for jogging). Stores tons of songs (got the 20GB version), sounds good and a good interface design.

I’ve read about the battery issue. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, search for ipod battery problem in any search engine, and start reading. Reports vary, but the battery doesn’t appear to be any worse than other Li-Ion batteries. The big thing is the process of replacing the battery and the cost. I figure a third-party battery will do the trick, and I can replace it myself. That way it isn’t as expensive (about $49 US for the battery).

One other great option for me is Belkin has made a Media Reader accessory for the iPod. What this allows you to do is copy files off a memory card. This means I don’t have to buy any more cards for my camera as long as I have the iPod with me.

One thing Apple did which doesn’t make sense. The 20GB version ships with a docking station. To me, this means I can take the dock and hook it to my pc. Well, I can, BUT I have to use the 1 cable that came in the package. This means I can’t have the dock permanently connected to my pc, and also have it hooked up somewhere else. I have to keep connecting and disconnecting the cable. Major oversite (or another instance of a company wanting to make more money by selling another cable). I’ll be writing an email to them about this, and I’ll see what sort of response I get…

ATI Remote Wonder II

Finally received my Remote Wonder II from ATI. More modern appearance, and a few extra buttons in comparison to the Remote Wonder that came with my video card.

Had troubles installing it, but finally got it figured out. Have to use the drivers from the CD that came with the AIW 9600 Pro, or else it won’t work. Also, mine came with dead batteries, so I had to put some batteries in it first.

As far as the extended range, I haven’t done any extensive testing yet.

I have my pc in the basement, and use the remote in the living room. I’m about 20 feet away. I find that sometimes the remote won’t work, but if I move it 1 inch to the left or right, it does work. Not sure why that is, but…

Noisy PC Continued

Finally did something about the noisy video card. Decided to buy a Zalman ZM80C-HP VGA cooler. Took awhile to install it, just because there are a number of parts, but the instructions were very thorough.

Got it installed, and now my PC is significantly quieter. Still not quite as quiet as I want it, but the most annoying fan is now silenced.

My new, but not so quiet PC

Just bought a new PC on Nov. 5, 2003. I’m very happy with it, except I find it noisy. Done some reading at various websites about noise, and even went as afar as replacing the processor heatsink with a Zalman CNPS7000A-ALCU, removing 1 of the 2 fans in my Enermax power supply. Of course all of this accomplished nothing other than making me waste time and money.

So, I took the side-panel off today and disconnected all of the case fans (5 of 7 are currently running). Still noisy. The Zalman has a speed control for the heatsink fan, so I turned it up and down to get a feel for the sound of the fan. That definitely wasn’t the source ( and the fan lives up to its reputation of being quiet). So, I did the unthinkable and stopped the fan on the power supply. It makes more noise than the Zalman fan, but still not that much.

Thinking to myself ‘ now what?’, I finally remembered there was 1 fan I still hadn’t given any thought to… the one on my video card. It’s not particularly larger (I have an AIW 9600 Pro), but as soon as I stopped it, the noise went away!!! Did I ever feel stupid wasting all this time to figure that out!

This fan must be spinning quite quickly to make as much noise as it does, so now it’s time to do some research and figure out how to quiet it down!
