Logitech support

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

Logitech just proved its worth. I bought the Driving Force Pro steering wheel in February to play Gran Turismo 4 on the PS/2. Great wheel and game. Recently, the pedals have been acting up. The game will think I’ve pressed the brake pedal when in fact I haven’t touched it.

Doing some research on the web, it seems there was a problem with the initial design of the pedals. Called Logitech, and they are sending me replacement pedals. No fuss, no muss and no shipping the defective product to them. They just ask that I destroy the s/n info so that someone else can’t use my pedals to make another claim.

According to some people on the web, Logitech heard about this problem, and has changed the design, so if you experience the problem, call Logitech and they’ll replace the pedals for you.

Command line completion in Win2K

Monday, April 18th, 2005

For those of you that still use the command line for doing things, here’s a handy tip for Win2K. After making this change to your registry, you can use the tab key to complete file/directory names (like UNIX supports).

Enter a partial name, and press the tab key. It will expand the line to the first item alphabetically that matches your partial name. Hit tab again, and it will display the next and so on. When it reaches the last, it will loop to the first name again.

Modify as follows:

In HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Command Processor.
edit the CompletionChar value, and set the value of REG_DWORD to 9. Note that you do not need to restart your computer.

AutoStitch – Photo panorama stitcher

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

(From Langalist. Free or paid newsletter worth subscribing to.)

This is demo software created by 2 PhD students at University of British Columbia. It currently only works with jpgs and doesn’t allow for defining the name of the output.

Looking at the pictures and the comments, it would appear to be very impressive, and well worth watching out for in the future.

I have a couple panorama shots, so I’ll have to convert them to jpg (as this is the only format currently supported) and see how it does.

A very comprehensive discussion of monitor technology, and LCDs in particular. Reading the article, there is no doubt DVI is the only way to go with an LCD. Well worth a skim, if not a comprehensive read.

CanadianDriver: Auto Tech – Cadillac’s Intellibeam

Wednesday, April 6th, 2005

Cadillac is introducing a smart high beam turn off system. Basically, it watches for oncoming headlights, and slowly dims the high beams until they’re off, rather then the sudden switch from high to low beams.

I would love this on my current car, as the low beams don’t shine far enough down the road, but I don’t want to blind oncoming traffic with my HIDs, especially on rural divided highways.

TYPEQUICK – The Computer Based Touch Typing Tutor

Monday, April 4th, 2005

An automated typing test. I scored 81wp/min with 97.3% accuracy, so not bad.

I had to stop typing for a short while to scroll the text back into view, so I could have been higher. The test advances the text a little for each keystroke. They obviously assume no corrections, but when I type, I make corrections if I feel I’ve typed incorrectly.

Anyhow, here’s the link if you want to take it yourself. They ask for info, but if you don’t provide it, they still allow you to take the test.
