Playing GT4 over the internet

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

The latest Playstation2 game, Gran Turismo 4 supports LAN play. This software runs on your PC and somehow allows you to use the LAN feature to connect to other users and play the game over the internet.

I read about the link at Joystiq originally. I haven’t tried it and don’t know how it works, but wanted to have it available for future reference.

Spam acting like undeliverable mail

Monday, February 21st, 2005

I’ve been getting more and more spam lately that is trying to act like undeliverable mail. It looks somewhat like a bounced message BUT all mail software puts the bounced message into the body of the message. It doesn’t ask you to click a link or open an attachment.

Beware! One is most likely looking to collect your email address for more spamming, and the other is most likely a virus.

Freeplay Music – Background for videos and other applications

Wednesday, February 9th, 2005

This site has a large collection of music that can be freely used in a non-commercial way (i.e. in your home videos). Free previews, and provided in a few lengths to sync to your video.

Could take awhile to find the sound you want, but that always takes time anyway.

JottoSoft Pixort

Tuesday, February 8th, 2005

A great piece of software for reviewing your images. I have started using it because it supports Minolta Raw files (it supports others too). This way I can run it and let it do a huge conversion of all my files that need to be reviewed. I can then select an image, or multiple images, and it shows it almost immediately, rather then having to wait for it to be rendered.

Extremely useful for reviewing individual photos to quickly check focus and other items to see if the picture is worth keeping.

Also very good for comparing multiple images of the same basic subject. Can have up to 6 images at once, and allows for zooming on all images at once.

A free version is available, but it doesn’t appear to support RAW. 30 day free trial, so check it out.

VBRFix

Some VBR mp3s will cause problems on some MP3 players because of invalid or incomplete headers.

This program will help fix them up so they should work correctly on all players.

Google Maps

Tuesday, February 8th, 2005

Google has introduced a mapping site (Similar to MapQuest).

It is very fast, as it leverages their search technology. To get directions, click on directions and then enter your to and from. All that is required is something like toronto for the from (I gues there aren’t too many Toronto’s). I was able to do a too by putting Thunder Bay Ontario as my to address.

Quite impressive. The only thing I’ve read that is different, is a double-click is required to centre on an address. Otherwise, use a click-and-drag to move the map.

Concept tire/wheel combinations

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2005

Two interesting new tire ideas from Michelin. No more flats or checking tire pressure. Also, smooth ride but good cornering is possible.

If it arrives, will the tread patterns be interchangeable from design to design, or will each Tweel be proprietary so you have to have a Goodyear Tweel to install a Goodyear tread, and a Michelin Tweel to install a Michelin tread? My guess is no, it would be similar to what we have now where you buy a wheel and put the appropriate size tire on it.
