I’ve used Clusty a few times. An interesting idea since it relies on analyzing what users do to provide more relevant results. I will be keeping an eye on it and see if it works better then Google for searches.

Freeduc-cd was the best of those looked at in the January 2005 issue.

Only works on Linux, but makes for a less expensive computer for your budding student.

A great Linux based system called Myth TV It provides all the functionality required.

Used to be difficult to install, but a number of people have been working on easy installs. Their work can be found at Axel Thimm’s ATrpms site.

An additional useful guide is Jarod Wilson’s Fedora Myth TV site.

Less expensive then installing Windows on your HTPC, and the hardware requirements are also less.

A new search engine that is in Beta. Some interesting features, and keeps track of stats of previous users to determine rankings. Can sort entries based on click counts and other stats.

Allows for dynamic filtering of search results, so can search for additional keywords within existing search without having to do a new search.

Worth keeping an eye on.
